As most of you are aware, it has been raining and raining and raining in GA...for days! Yes, we needed the rain but 6 inches of rain all in a matter of days! Whew! Well, last night and today it has been raining so hard and so long. Monday is usual Wal-Mart/Publix grocery run day. I debated long and hard about the trip today as it was a monsoon when we got ready to leave. I decided that since it's just rain, I would drive slowly since Wal-Mart is only about 5 miles away and stay on the main roads. Yes, my logic wasn't very good today. I watched the news last night and this morning hearing of all the road closings and school closings. Yet, I still went...with 2 year old in tow. What was I thinking?
I don't think my speedometer reached 35 the whole trip. Large puddles everywhere and rain so thick I was having trouble seeing but I was determined. I took it slow through the lakes and ponds with my windshield wipers on their highest speed. When I reached Wal-Mart, it was just barely sprinkling. Figures. But, as I was shopping, I realized the monsoon had followed me as I heard the heavy rain on the roof. I did my shopping as slowly as possible, taking time to browse a few things I wouldn't normally look at, hoping that the rain would blow on over. No such luck.
I was smart and ties all my bags as I put them in the cart. This made such a huge difference. I wheeled Charlie out in the buggy into the torrential rains. I did have an umbrella but it was a small one. I was able to keep Charlie and me dry on the way to the car. After that is a whole different story. Since I now have the SUV, I thought I could keep us both dry under the back door...again, no such luck. I learned the hard way that you can't fit a whole buggy and me under that door. I was trying my hardest to hold the umbrella over Charlie while I loaded bags into the back. (He refused to hold it.) He still got soaked and was not happy about it. Next time, I'll load him first! After getting everything/everyone loaded, I realized we were both soaked and decided not to make the trip to Publix.
On our trip home in the monsoon, the puddles were a little less deep and less numerous than the trip to Wal-Mart. However, there was one spot en route that was pretty deep and wide. There were about six or seven cars waiting to go through this mini "lake". I watched one little car drive through and bog out. The guy had to climb out of his car and push it out of the water. I decided at that point to turn around and find another way. We made it home safely...in case you were wondering.
When I pulled into the garage, guess what I still had to deal with...water! Not flooded but enough to concern me so I grabbed a broom and began to sweep water out into in the driveway. Charlie had his own broom too (but wasn't much help.) :) We usually get water in the garage under our side door when it rains, but with as much water as we were getting outside, it was multiplied inside. Water flows down the side of the house and puddles at the door instead of flowing on down the driveway. I used a couple of blocks we had around to divert water hoping to keep the amount of water down in the garage. (Mainly, because I didn't want to be down there sweeping every hour.) But, in doing this I got drenched! My shoes were sloshing!
And...as I write this...it is still raining. And more is on its way. I'm thankful, however, that we have electricity and we have water. I can't say the same for some parts of GA.
