I don't have many pics of Charlie in the bathtub, if any, but I couldn't resist this moment the other night. Khaki is usually outside in the afternoons and at night. Occasionally, she is inside at night especially if we can avoid her getting soaked in the rain. (It's a pain to dry her off to bring her inside at night.) This was one of those nights so she was right there with Charlie and I during bathtime. Charlie has learned how to use his squirty toys and will squirt my legs to get a reaction out of me. I started squirting Khaki and Charlie just cackled! So, I got Charlie to start squirting her with water...

Last Blast Summer Olympics
This past Sunday, we had the Last Blast Summer Olympics at our church for our youth and youth from other congregations in the metro ATL area. I'm not sure how many congregations were represented but I think we had around 120 kids. Our summer intern, Andrew, planned it all with some help from the Moore family. It was a big hit with the kids. They were divided into 5 teams and they competed in different events throughout the afternoon. These included events like volleyball, dodgeball, homerun derby, water balloon toss, walk the line, an obstacle course, Bible trivia and others. Hot dogs were served for dinner and we had a devo following. Here are a few pics from the day...

Charlie and I weren't involved much with the activities for obvious reasons. I guess we were really just there for show. :\ But, Charlie had a great time pushing his mower and bike around and had a blast on the playground. I got him to slide down the slide with me at the bottom to catch him. He would climb up the rock wall on the back and then slide down. The best part of the whole event for us was the band. Charlie entertained while the band practiced and did their mic checks. He kept wanting them to play more. That night at the concert, Charlie showed off his moves. Child's got some rhythm! He loves the music. The band played oldies but goodies and a few contemporary hits. See for yourself...
After everything was over, Charlie got to play in the balloons that were left. He got sooo excited over them. I even heard his excited laugh that sounds sinister. That's when you know he's having fun! Emma, Morgan and Michael, I think, enjoyed it as much as Charlie did!

birthday parties
I guess we have finally entered the world of endless kids' birthday parties. We had two this past weekend. One was for a friend of mine's son's second birthday. We got to know this couple at a mutual friend's wedding back in March. Daniel and Matt were both groomsmen and Becky and I were at all the showers for the bride-to-be. So, needless to say, we're now close. We've tried to get together to let the boys play but haven't suceeded yet.
Anyway, they had his party at a miniature farm in Canton. Charlie was very hesitant of the animals. He enjoyed looking at them from afar (like behind a fence or on my hip) but if you tried to get him to pet or feed them, he cried and screamed. By the end of the tour through the farm, we was warming up to them as you can see in the pics. He was ok with the little sheep and goats but if one approached him that was his height, he pitched a fit and wanted up. Charlie never fed any of them. He just would let them get close to them. His favorite animal at the farm was...you guessed it...the dog. They had one in the sheep pen. After the tour was cake! It was a cute little farm animal themed cake that had Little People farm animals on top. Charlie enjoyed this part! It was a very hot and humid day and I was pouring sweat by the time we left around lunch but we had fun. Charlie almost immediately fell asleep in the car. It just wore him out! But, it got us out and exposed Charlie to something new. Thanks to Becky and Matt for inviting us to celebrate the little one's birthday!
The second party we went to on Saturday was for our next door neighbor. She turned 6. They just had a little get together at their house for family and a few friends. Since Charlie took a nap in the car on the way home, we were able to go and stay a while. (The party was scheduled for the same time as his usual naptime.) Charlie was in familiar territory so he made himself at home no matter how many new people were there. And, once Nathan got up from his nap, Charlie was beside himself. Nathan and Charlie get to play together almost every Thursday.
Daniel's day was full with the party in the morning and then setting up for the Last Blast Summer Olympics at church. This event took place on Sunday. (That post to follow this one.) He was there ALL afternoon. I stayed home so that Charlie could finish out his nap and we could make it to the party at 2:00. Daniel was supposed to come home and join us but there was just too much to do to get ready for the big event.

dog vs. cat
Who gets the kennel? Wait, it's called a dog kennel. Doesn't that mean only dogs are allowed in it?
I've seen the cat in the kennel before. She likes to get in and drink Khaki's water. Since Charlie has discovered the kennel, I've had to keep Khaki's kennel locked. Otherwise, Charlie would constantly be climbing in and out of it, playing in Khaki's water bowl and getting covered in dog hair. Due to this, I haven't seen the cat in it in a while because it's locked. I guess the other night, Daniel opened the kennel and walked off to get Khaki. At that point, Lucy made a break for the water bowl and went in the kennel. When Daniel got to the kennel with Khaki, there sat the cat. Usually, Khaki gets really excited and will bounce at the cat and hoard over her but this time, Khaki just walked in like it was nothing.

sleep, my child, sleep...
We had a rough night last night with Charlie. I just don't understand sometimes why he won't go to sleep. This seems to be a theme here lately...hopefully, just a phase. When he got up from his nap yesterday, I took him outside to try and wear him down. Walking+heat=sweaty boy and hopefully, a tired boy. So we did the usual routine: dinner, bible study, bath, read a book, sing our songs, say our prayers and off to bed. Everthing worked great...for a minute or two. And then, the crying and whining commence. That was at about 8:30. At this point, I'm thinking that surely he will be asleep by 9:00. Daniel and I were planning on watching a movie after Charlie went to sleep. 9:00 came and 9:00 went. Still crying and whining. Daniel and I have each gone in to comfort him already by this point, but, most of the time, that just made it worse. So then the screaming begins. Around 10:00, Daniel gets comfy on the couch and falls asleep. He said that he couldn't hear Charlie crying if he was asleep. It was my choice to let Charlie cry it out so I guess I deserved that. :\ About 10:15, I couldn't listen to anymore crying. I mean...an hour and a half? Who could take much more than that? I got Charlie up and he laid on the couch with me for about 15 minutes. At 10:30, I told Charlie it was time to go to bed. He got up, walked to his room and let me put him in his crib...and went right to sleep! What!?! All of that and then he just lays down without a fight? 2 year olds...do they just put a fight because they can?

fixin' the jeep
Daniel had a flat tire on the Jeep on Friday and since we were heading out of town for the weekend, we had to wait until Monday to get it fixed. I took the Jeep to the Goodyear place where we get all of our car maintenance done. It's nice to have a place you trust. I had taken Khaki to the vet earlier that day just for her annual visit since I had the Jeep and didn't have to worry with the dog being in that vehicle. Granted, the Jeep is 14 years old, but is still running and Daniel vows to drive it until it goes kaput. (I have no clue how to spell "kaput".) Anyway, I take the dog back home and stop and get Charlie and I lunch, hoping that this will help pass the time while we wait on the flat tire to be patched. Below is Charlie's lunch. What else would you expect? :)
The tire was unable to be patched and I was informed that the other three tires were needing to be replaced. Figures. So, $400 later, there are 4 beautiful new tires on Daniel's Jeep. Atleast we got a good deal on them. But, this also meant that I had to wait another 45 minutes to an hour for the tires to be installed. That's a problem with a 2 year old who has already finished his Happy Meal. Now what? Ooo, magazines with pictures of cars! Oh, there are also magazines with motorcycles! Yeah, that lasted 5 minutes. By this point, Charlie has also drunk about half of my sweet tea so the sugar and caffeine kick in. You'd think I would learn. He is climbing on chairs, behind the tv, between the chair and the glass windows and under tables. Atleast he's occupied and not screaming. He kept pointing to the gumball machines saying "ball. ball." After he gets bored with the climbing thing, I pull out a quarter and get Charlie a gumball. Luckily, he has no idea what good sugary splendor a gumball has and proceeds to roll it on the floor. (He didn't chunk it at me. For that, I was so thankful.) He also kept putting it back in the gumball machine where it came out at and then would look at me with his hands turned up and say the usual "uh, uh, ball?" in order for me to respond, "Where is the ball?" We proceeded to play this game for a while which tickled the guy who was also sitting in the waiting area. Other activities with the gumball included: rolling it across the table and it hitting the floor which Charlie then had to go chase it; rolling it across the whole waiting area which I then had to fish it out from under the TV stand; me yelling at Charlie to get it out of his mouth (yuck!)...this only happened a couple of times but I can only imagine what germs were on the thing; Charlie trying to hide it under my legs; and lastly, Charlie throwing it and it hitting the wall which meant it landed on the floor in two pieces. After that, Charlie kept repeating the work "broke" until we left. He would point to the pieces and say "ball? broke." I couldn't help but laugh at this. So, needless to say, when in doubt, buy a $0.25 gumball. You'll get every penny's worth out of it!

And, to top off my wonderful "fixin' the jeep" post...Daniel drove it to work yesterday with brand new tires. (Also, remember, we just put new brakes on it...see the post "busy, busy" if you missed that one.) He went to drive it home and...it wouldn't start. Again, figures. He tried to jump start it but no luck so I drove over to pick him up. He had it towed today back to the Goodyear place. There goes that $69 dollars to the towing company. Spark plug...gone. Battery contact wiring...shot. Needs a major tune-up...670 smakeroos! We opted for the $40 "get it running again" option and will now be driving it as little as possible. Since I am home most days, we can deal with only one car. No biggie. Beats taking on a car payment.
the miniature horse
This past weekend we spent in AL for a special occasion that I will post more about later. We stayed at Daniel's parents' house this time. When we arrived Friday night, Papa informed us that they had something for Charlie out in the barn. It was late at night so we had to wait until the next morning to see it. They told us they had gotten him a miniature horse.
The next morning, while Gram was fixing breakfast for all of us, Papa decided to get out the miniature horse for Charlie. I guess he just couldn't wait any longer for Charlie to ride it. I can't blame him. Here is the miniature horse...
One of Daniel's little cousins had gotten it for Christmas and outgrew it so they offered it to Gram and Papa for Charlie. I mean, how could you turn a red mustang down? So, thanks Ivy!
Charlie can't reach the pedal yet and has to learn how to steer but that didn't stop him. You'll notice in the video that Papa had to improvise and push the pedal for it to go. By the end of the weekend though, Charlie just wanted to sit in it and push the radio and the horn. He didn't like for you to make it move. It is staying in AL so I'm sure many hours will be spent on it when visiting Gram and Papa in the future. It won't take long and Charlie will have it mastered!

"operation: no pacifier" and other stuff
We are on day 4 of "operation: no pacifier" and so far so good. I'm not going to say it's been easy but it hasn't been just awful. The first night was pretty bad in that it took us about 45 minutes to get him to go to sleep. The most he has cried since then is about 15-20 minutes...wait, screaming is more the appropriate word most of the time. But, mostly, he just screams or whines for about 10 minutes and then just lays down and goes to sleep. If he wakes up during the night or during his nap, he goes back to crying, whining and sometimes screaming but, again, after about 10-15 minutes, he's back asleep. He will ask for it during the day and sometimes at night and I just tell him, "paci's gone gone." He repeats "gone gone" and accepts it.
Charlie has progressed a good bit with his vocabulary. He sure talks alot for someone who doesn't have many "words". I guess one of these days we'll figure out what he's saying. We're still trying to figure out "dah-bah" and "eee-dah". Let's see...I'll try and think of the words he knows. I'm sure I'll forget some. Bye. Buh-bye. Puppy. Dada. Daddy. I'm still Baba. Papa. Pam (Gram). Man-Man (Bran-Bran, his cousin). Nay-Nay (Aunt Stacey). Uncle. He calls both my parents "wee". I have no idea why. ool (pool). beach. ball. buh-buh (bubbles). bye (bike). gone gone. uh oh. keys. waw-ma (wal-mart). puh-buh (publix). mailman. no. yah (yes). baby. ar (car). uck (truck). beep beep. honk honk. that's mine (thanks, branson). bite. uh (up). auck (off). bible. book. whee! He learned Emma and Mo (Morgan) at Horizons last week. He has a sound for Kathy but it's not clear yet. Charlie's got alot of the animal sounds as well. He's starting to mimic words too and will try and say words if you ask him to. The other day we were walking down the stairs and he stubbled a little and of course went "uh oh". I said something like, "Be careful now. Don't fall down the stairs cause that would hurt." As soon as he heard the word hurt he said "ow." I couldn't help but laugh. So we're seeing lots of progress. Someone told me that once the pacifier is gone that his words will come even quicker. We'll see. I know that once he starts to his Mother's Morning Out program in a few weeks, we'll see a dramatic change.
I keep having these moments where I turn around to check on Charlie and he surprises me. He's climbed up (and sometimes standing) on something or is somewhere I wouldn't expect. Here are a couple of them...
Charlie is taking another round of antibiotics. He woke up from his nap on Saturday with a bloodshot right eye and a runny nose. It wasn't better on Sunday so Charlie and I missed worship. He then developed a little cough. I took him to the pediatrician on Monday and...pink eye in BOTH eyes and an ear infection in his left ear. Luckily, you wouldn't ever know Charlie was sick by the way he acts. He's just up and playing as usual.

the van ride
How to survive a 7 hour church van ride with a two year old...
Thanks Kathy, Morgan and Emma!

Horizons 2009

Charlie and I spent last week in Henderson, TN at Freed-Hardeman University for Horizons 2009. The theme was "Wonderful, Merciful Savior". It was an awesome week! All the lessons/classes were inspiring and uplifting.
Get ready for a long post because I've got to cover a week's worth of Horizons and Charlie moments! So, there's lots of pictures and lots of videos!
Get ready for a long post because I've got to cover a week's worth of Horizons and Charlie moments! So, there's lots of pictures and lots of videos!
I was a counselor with friends of mine from my church - Kathy, Morgan & Emma. We had the best group of girls on our hall. They were so much fun and didn't give us a bit of trouble. We even had one to decide to be baptized. That was truly an awesome moment! Here are a couple of pics of our girls doing a craft during Counselor time at night...

Charlie's favorite part of the day was the Grande Pelota! (large ball in spanish) During the morning wake-up time in the auditorium, there was ball time and then the Grand Pelota would make an appearance. We never got to touch it because it never came our way but every time we entered the auditorium, Charlie immediately started saying, "ball? ball? ball?" with his hands turned up like "where is it?"
Then, someone gave Charlie a "pequena pelota". (small ball) He had a blast playing with Andrew (our summer intern).
Then, someone gave Charlie a "pequena pelota". (small ball) He had a blast playing with Andrew (our summer intern).

Let's see...other moments...Charlie got to talk to his daddy almost every night. He enjoyed hearing his dad's voice. He would just grin and rock back and forth on his feet while he talked. I had trouble getting the phone away from him so I could talk to Daniel. It was fun for me to watch him.
Charlie stayed entertained in the dorm room with his cars. I set up the race track and that is about all he played with when we were in the room. Kathy, Morgan and Emma all had their turn playing with him.
Charlie's bathtime... Monday night, Kathy, Morgan and Emma did karaoke at the coffee shop. Charlie loved the music that everyone was performing and would dance...
Thursday night was awards night. It was done similar to the Academy Awards. There were awards given in amongst the talent show. Due to the theme, the counselors were asked to dress up for the occasion. Kathy and I swapped duties with Morgan and Emma so they could dress up. Kathy was paparazzi and I was an usher. Andrew dressed up in a tux as well. I couldn't let Charlie miss out on all the fun so I asked around and found him a tux too! All night I kept hearing "awww" and "he's so cute!" So, I guess it was a hit. You can decide for yourself. Here are pics from the night...One of the highlights of the week for me was "racquetball singing". Our youth group along with about 3 or 4 other groups went to the racquetball courts on campus. Since the court is completely sealed, the acoustics are incredible. I about couldn't sing because it affected me to the point of tears.
It was a great week and I will continue to keep going year after year. It is physically and emotionally draining but is worth every minute of it. I pray everyone there was pricked in their hearts to truly seek out who Jesus is as our wonderful, merciful Savior.

Panama City Beach 2009

Ah, a family vacation in FL...what more could you ask for? We headed to AL for the Father's Day weekend and then headed down to PCB on Tuesday with all of Daniel's family. It was beautiful weather...hot, but beautiful. We had a little thunderstorm come one day but other than that...sun!Charlie LOVED the beach. He loved playing in the sand. He loved the waves washing up over his feet (unless they got rough). He absolutely loved being out in the water on his float. He kept asking to go out in the water. After seeing how much he loved the water at the lake a few weeks ago, I was hoping for/expecting this reaction. I think his favorite thing to do though was to get water from the ocean, bring it up on the beach, and pour it out. He did this over and over and had all of us going to get him bucketfulls. His favorite was either that or getting to eat cheese puffs and drink capri suns on the beach. Daniel and I had a blast with him on the beach as well. Branson, my nephew, just hopped in the middle with us. I helped him build sand castles and find shells. Branson got a little courageous and ventured into the water with his boogie board. He's never really done that before so it was fun to see him having fun in the water for a change.
The house we stayed in was on the beach so we were able to go back and forth as needed which was really nice. It has a big deck on the back and we had a canopy set up so that there was more shade. This was a perfect spot for mornings. We could sit and enjoy the view with our coffee or breakfast and not be in the sun first thing. This also made it possible for Charlie to play in his sprinkle n splash island (aka...pool) first thing and us not be scorching in the sun keeping an eye on him. He had so much fun in his pool as well. Branson seemed to enjoy playing in it too but is was a little small with both of them in it.
Charlie napped in the afternoons so I got some time on the beach to myself which was nice. Daniel's mom was really good about watching him too for me to stay a little longer without a two year old whining at me. I did, however, manage to get burned. Nothing really bad but enough to keep me out of the sun for a day or two.
So, Tuesday - Friday was spent on the beach. Pretty much, as much time as we could get in, we were on the beach. We came in to eat lunch, snack, or potty break and back we go. We had canopies on the beach as well so, again, it was all baking in the sun. :)
Thursday night we went to Pier Park to eat dinner. Our plans were to go to Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville but there was a two and a half to three hour wait! So, we decided to walk across the street where we had a 15 minute wait and that was only because we wanted to sit inside instead of out on the patio in the sun. We ate at Guy Harvey's Island Grill. It wasn't just the best place I've ever eaten but it beat a 3 hour wait! We then walked around Pier Park. Charlie was bound and determined to cover every inch of the place on foot and he sure tried. It took Daniel, me, Gram and Papa to keep up with him. He did so much walking that he rubbed blisters on his feet. We stopped at a place that had live music. Charlie enjoyed that. We watched/listened from outside. I sat him up on a rail so he could see and he just danced to the music. The lead singer saw him and waved and Charlie waved back. It was really cute. Here is a video that Daniel took of Charlie dancing...
Friday, Daniel's sister's friend came with her two boys and they, along with Branson, played hard in the ocean until we realized they were getting stung by jellyfish. Charlie was out on his float with Gram and Papa and got his first jellyfish sting on the back of his leg. He didn't seem to notice much. The boys got out their nets and starting catching them to see how many they could get. It was really cool to see them in the bucket swimming around. They are actually quite beautiful to watch.
Saturday, Daniel's sister and her family went to Big Kahuna in Destin for the day. We decided not to go with them due to my sunburn. :/ So, the three of us and Daniel's parents went to Destin to the outlet mall. Charlie did not like this plan apparently because he was unhappy the whole time we were there...and, guess who had to tote him? Me, of course. I was about to have a heat stroke with a two year old attached around my neck. Daniel and both his parents tried to relieve me but Charlie just wasn't having it. Our shopping trip got cut short due to this but he was better once we got to a restaurant to eat lunch that had AC. I was in a better mood too. It's weird how being hot makes you cranky...well, along with Charlie's whining and crying...that could have been part of me being irritable too. We ate at Cheeseburger in Paradise and all had wonderful cheeseburgers. I had sweet potato chips with mine that were so good! We then headed back to the house to put Charlie down for a nap!
Sunday was packing day and we all left around lunch to head back to AL. We stayed at my parents' house that night so that we weren't making a 6 hour trip with Charlie. We headed back to ATL on Monday
