sitting up...
Yes. You read that right. My little Philip is now sitting up on his own. I knew he was pretty close but tried it the other day and he just sat there like a big boy! You do still have to keep your hands nearby because the inevitable falling over will come soon. He can sit for I'd say around 30 seconds to a minute before he wobbles. It depends on how good the toy in front of him is. :)

the great outdoors
We finally were able to get outside and enjoy the outdoors today. Charlie and I played outside for a few minutes yesterday but Philip joined us today and we all enjoyed the beautiful weather...

sick babies...
I've got two sick little boys at my house. Crossing my fingers and praying that Daniel nor I get it. We went to the doc yesterday. That was definitely a challenge with two sick boys, one of which is no longer in a carrier and cannot sit up. We went through the questioning...cough, runny nose, fever, etc.
Charlie was swabbed in his nose for the flu. His chest was clear and so were his ears. Doc said he had a pretty red throat though. The flu test came back negative so they swabbed his throat for strep. Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner! Test was positive. What did he win? A round of antibiotics and a few days of no school. Fortunately, this was an antibiotic that Publix provides for free!
Philip was looked over as well since he is suffering from the same symptoms as Charlie. Doc did hear some wheezing when she checked his lungs. They brought in a breathing treatment for Philip to take while in the office. He was hungry at this point so he cried and swirmed through the whole ordeal. Just as soon as they turned on the machine, Charlie began to cry as well. I don't know if it was the big brother in him kicking in and he didn't like us doing that to Philip or if it just scared him in general. Either way, both boys cried the whole 5 minutes. And, since Charlie's strep test came back positive, they swabbed Philip for strep as well. Luckily, his was negative. An inhaler was prescribed for Philip to use at home to help with the wheezing though. He has done well with it so far and doesn't fight me at all to use it.
So other than a trip to the doc and a trip tonight to the grocery store, I have yet to see the outside world since Friday night. (When did I sign up for the role of nurse? Oh, yeah...when I pushed that first youngin' out!) I'm hoping to get the boys out tomorrow night for bible study but I'm not positive on that. Otherwise, we'll see humans again on Friday when I take Charlie to school. The doc cleared him to go back tomorrow but I'm a little hesitant. Prayers for my two boys are welcome...and ones for their nurse!

new car seats
Last week the pediatrician advised me to move Philip into a bigger car seat. That meant a new car seat for everyone! Charlie moved into a booster seat with a back...
Philip, being the second child, got the hand-me-down but new to him...

I love that Charlie's seat uses the seat belt so no more harness...yay! He's feeling like a big boy now and has been so excited about a new car seat. For months, Charlie and I have been having the conversation over the seat belt and that when he gets bigger and gets a new car seat that he could use the seat belt. It's so nice that he can unbuckle himself as well.
Philip hasn't shown any preference one way or the other to a new seat. It has become a little bit of a challenge for me since he can't sit up on his own yet so when we go into a restaurant, grocery store, etc. I don't have the carrier to sit him in. But it's nice not having to haul the carrier around or up and down our stairs!

Charlie vs. the cat's food
Charlie loves to play with the cat's food. He likes to take her piece by piece in hopes that she'll eat them. I try and keep him out of it but you can't always keep your eye on him! One day I got out of the shower to find this...
"Look Mommy! I throw it!" :\ What can you do but laugh? I hope you can see all the little dots of food on the floor. He did have to pick every piece up though...which took FOREVER!
Then, the other day, I walked back to check on Charlie...

"Kitty needed some more food." Luckily, the bag was almost empty. He had just turned it upside down and dumped it into her bowl.

Zesty Turkey Tenderloin With Vegetables
I've been trying out some new recipes that I've found online. Most of the time, I don't have much luck with them but here lately, I've found some great ones. I'll try and share a few each day but will leave you with the one we had tonight that was FABULOUS! It's a great healthy recipe and easy to make. Daniel loved it and Charlie even ate it! I couldn't find a turkey tenderloin so I used pork. It took much longer in the broiler than what the recipe calls for. Also, I left out the cilantro and used apple cider vinegar instead of the red wine vinegar. It's just what I had. Enjoy!

6 month check-up
Philip went in for his 6 month well check-up today. The first thing the doc asked me was, "does anybody believe that he's only 6 months old?" :\ Um...no. But, that just proves that he's healthy! His stats affirm that as well...weight - 20 lbs. 3 oz. (97%); height - 28 3/4" (upper 97%); head circumference - 18 1/4" (97%). Some of the things that were asked: Can he roll both ways? Reaches for objects? Pass and object from one hand to the other? Can he sit up while leaning on his hands (tripod position)? Does he make direct eye contact? Does he turn toward sounds like when you call his name? Does he babble, squeal, etc? And the answer to all of them is "yes."
Philip is sleeping through the night (11-12 hours). Two naps (sometimes three) a day. Eating is fine - nurses 4-5 times a day for about 20 minutes at a time. He eats cereal, fruits and veggies throughout the day. One of my concerns was if I was feeding him too much/not enough. She asked if he had begun to close his mouth and turn his head away when he was full. I giggled and said I haven't gotten him to that point yet. I was afraid to keep feeding him! That boy will eat til there's nothing left and still want more! She said he was a little skinny for his height and to go ahead and feed that boy! I am afraid that it will begin to take the place of nursing so I'm gonna have to watch my timing but it's a good thing that I've been building my supply of baby food.
On a different note, I started using cloth diapers on Philip yesterday. He was in them all day today. Love them. I need to get a pail and a liner but other than that, I think it's going to work out great! For those who haven't seen a cloth diaper in a while, go to http://www.bumgenius.com/ and check them out. We're not talking your momma's prefolds with rubber pants! Who knew diapers could be high-tech!?! I feel so proud using cloth diapers and making my own baby food, etc. Doing what's best for my baby, helping out mother earth a little bit, and saving money all at the same time...what could be better?
And, I'll leave you with a sweet picture...Charlie decided Philip needed to look like Mr. Potato Head...
